This year one of our goals as a middle school staff was to work on more collaborative projects. Our objective provides students with multiple opportunities to work on large projects across content areas, allowing time to practice and master skills. For example, our first big project was having the 8th grade make 90 Second Newbery Films.
This was a great opportunity to have a cooperative learning unit between the Media Class and Language Arts. We started with having the students select Newbery books to read at the end of September. In November, we started planning and prewriting in Language Arts. Storyboarding and filming were completed in Media Class. During the process, we had learning checkpoints, completed self-evaluations, provided peer feedback, and had student teacher meetings. The unit finished in December right before the holiday break, we had hot chocolate and cookies then met in the auditorium to watch the Newbery Films!
